Landing page optimization: how to turn visitors into customers

Last updated: October 2026 · Author: Sarah Johanna Ferara

Picture a situation where you invest thousands of euros a month in Meta and Google campaigns, web traffic pours in through the doors and windows, but real enquiries or purchases trickle in embarrassingly slowly. It is a scenario we see at Maison Mint every month in our digital audits.

Your digital marketing may be technically brilliant: SEO brings organic traffic and visually gripping social media ads bring cheap clicks. But if the page the user lands on cannot convince them, all the previous effort and budget has gone to waste. In this guide we unpack how to build a landing page that actually converts.

What a landing page is and why an ordinary homepage does not work

A landing page and a homepage play completely different roles, and confusing them is one of the costliest digital marketing mistakes companies make.

A landing page is a specially built web page with one focus: to produce one specific action, a conversion. Whether that is buying a product, sending a B2B enquiry or joining a newsletter. The purpose of an ordinary homepage is to be the company's digital business card, with its long menus and many exits.

If you send paid Meta or Google ad traffic to your ordinary homepage, you often cause the user so-called analysis paralysis (analysis paralysis). Too many choices kill conversion. The visitor clicks a menu item, ends up in an article, forgets the ad and leaves without buying.

The differences between a homepage and a landing page

Maison Mint tip: clarity sells better than beauty alone. A functionally clear page often converts better than an over-designed showpiece. Remove superfluous header menus and footer links and direct the user's focus to one specific CTA (call-to-action) button. If you need such a page quickly, talk to us.
Part 2

Matching the traffic source: SEO vs social media

Not all web visitors are equal. One of the biggest mistakes is expecting the same landing page to work perfectly for every traffic source.

SEO: organic traffic from search engines

When a person searches Google for a specific solution, they have high buying intent (intent-driven traffic). Landing pages optimized through SEO have to be more informative. Detailed specifications, longer text, comparison tables and FAQ sections work well on these pages. Our autonomous SEO and GEO platform Pinnly was built precisely to lift such intent-based landing pages in search results and AI answers.

Social media ads (Meta, TikTok, LinkedIn)

When a person sees your social media ad, their traffic is impulse-based. You interrupted their entertainment. Traffic from social media demands a landing page that is short, visually engaging and focused on emotion. Use short sentences, quality video and image material and a very specific offer.

Cross-channel attribution

A strong organic presence supports social media campaigns. A person may see a Meta ad but only buy later, after googling the brand and landing on an SEO-optimized page. This is called an assisted conversion, and without proper server-side tracking it often stays invisible.

Maison Mint tip: build a separate landing page for every major Meta & Google Ads campaign, whose headline and offer match the ad's message exactly. Message match (message match) can lift the conversion rate by 20 to 40%.
Part 3

5 critical elements of a converting landing page

All converting pages share the same structure. Here are the five elements without which no landing page can do its job.

1. A specific, attention-grabbing headline

You have only a few seconds to convince the visitor to stay on the page. The headline has to address the user's problem or desire immediately. Our team often uses the PAS model (Problem, Agitation, Solution), which speaks to the audience's pain points and offers them an immediate solution.

2. A strong value proposition and an above-the-fold CTA

The user has to be able to take the action without scrolling down the page. This is called the above-the-fold strategy. It includes a visually distinct, high-contrast CTA button. Avoid dull texts like "Submit"; use action-oriented microcopy instead, such as "Start your free trial" or "Book a free consultation".

3. Social proof and local trust marks

In any local market, local authenticity is critical. Add the logos of companies you have helped (with their permission), or for online stores the local e-commerce association's trusted shop badge. In B2B, video-based success stories from local business owners, with concrete numbers in the results, work well.

4. Minimal friction and local integrations

Consumer expectations of convenience are high. Use the local digital identity and one-click sign-in integrations your market offers (in the Nordics and Baltics, for example, Smart-ID and Mobile-ID). Apply multi-step forms (multi-step forms) to engage the user gradually. An exit-intent popup that offers last-minute value before the user leaves the page is effective too.

5. Technical speed and optimization

If your page takes longer than 3 seconds to load on mobile, you lose a significant share of your ad budget. Technically optimized pages (fast servers, WebP images, clean code) as a rule reach a considerably higher conversion rate than slow competitors. In 2024 the Core Web Vitals metric INP replaced the old FID, and it is now one of Google's most important experience signals.

Maison Mint tip: our Forge web development platform was built precisely for such lightning-fast landing pages that include all the necessary analytics integrations: server-side Meta CAPI, GA4, Consent Mode v2 and local digital ID sign-in are included from the start.
Part 4

B2B sales pages vs e-commerce (Shopify)

The "right" structure of a converting landing page depends on whether you sell a product with a cart or collect qualified enquiries.

The specifics of Shopify e-commerce

When advertising, the landing page has to be an optimized product page or collection page, not the store's front page. In Shopify management we recommend hiding superfluous navigation elements during campaigns to keep the focus on the purchase process. Use one clear "Add to cart" button with additional trust signals next to it.

Offer the local payment methods consumers expect: in each market the dominant bank links, cards and wallets through a payment partner, plus the parcel lockers and carriers people actually use. Every integration left out means a lost purchase.

B2B and collecting enquiries

In B2B the goal is to collect qualified enquiries, not an immediate purchase. If you target a wider market, as our B2B email marketing service does, the page has to be credible and often multilingual to speak to an international business audience.

Compare the core elements of the two approaches:

Element
E-commerce
B2B lead gen
Main CTA
Add to cart / buy now
Book a consultation
Form length
Minimal (fast purchase)
Medium (3 to 5 fields)
Page length
Short, visual
Longer, thorough
Trust signals
Reviews, payment logos
Cases, logos, certificates
Conversion rate
1.5% – 2.8%
2.1% – 3.5%
Part 5

Analytics and GDPR: how to measure marketing success?

Without precise measurement, landing page optimization is shooting blind. Here are three technical pillars that have to be in order in 2026.

  1. GA4 and Google Tag Manager: campaign management requires precise event tracking (scrolling, video views, button clicks, form steps). Every micro-event gives the AI algorithm more to feed on.
  2. Meta Pixel and the Conversions API: server-side tracking (CAPI) has become essential so that data reaches the ad platforms correctly even when the browser blocks third-party cookies.
  3. GDPR compliance: the cookie banner has to comply with the Consent Mode v2 framework to protect data privacy and keep ad optimization capability even for users who do not consent.
Maison Mint tip: do not let your ad agency leave the GA4 and Meta CAPI setup as the last step. If the page analytics is not in place on day one, you lose the first 2 to 4 weeks of learning data and the algorithm never catches up.
Part 6

Post-conversion: what happens after the click?

Professional marketing does not end with the conversion. The first minutes after a purchase or enquiry are one of the most valuable moments of the customer journey.

Use dedicated thank-you pages (thank you page) for upselling, explaining the next step and continuing the customer journey smoothly. Launch an immediate email marketing automationto keep the customer warm and offer them extra value: guides, discount codes, booking links.

The thank-you page also has an analytical role: it is the ideal place to confirm the conversion in GA4 and Meta CAPI, run a survey on the quality of the offer and start the initial relationship. Do not leave this page at Shopify's or WordPress's default.

Maison Mint tip: a thank-you page should contain three elements: a clear next step ("Add to calendar"), a small upsell offer and a social sharing button. Those three elements can lift average customer value by 10 to 15%.
Part 7

Maison Mint data: market benchmarks

Based on our experience across accounts we have mapped average conversion rates in different sectors (our own data, illustrative). Use these numbers as a starting point, not a ceiling.

Sector
Average CR
Strong page
Real estate (lead gen)
1.8% – 2.5%
4%+
B2B SaaS software
2.1% – 3.5%
5%+
E-commerce
1.5% – 2.8%
4.5%+
Health and beauty services
4.0% – 6.5%
8%+

The magic of CRO lies in mathematics: by lifting the conversion rate from 1% to 2% you double your revenue without increasing the ad budget. It is one of the few digital marketing levers that delivers a growing ROI over the long term.

Summary

Landing page optimization is a symbiosis of exact science and psychology. From a clear value proposition to technical speed, every detail counts. Do not let your ad budget go to waste because of a deficient web page.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Answers to the most frequently asked questions about landing page optimization.

An ordinary homepage is a general source of information with several goals, while a landing page is strictly focused on one specific goal. A landing page removes all distracting elements (navigation, footer links) and directs the user's attention to one action only.

Every extra second of mobile load time lowers the conversion rate considerably. If the user leaves before seeing the page, you have already paid for the ad but lost the chance of a sale. That directly worsens your ROAS and raises your CPA.

Trust comes from the payment methods people recognize (local bank links, cards and wallets through an established payment partner), a trusted shop badge from the local e-commerce association, the parcel lockers and carriers people use, and familiar digital identity sign-in such as Smart-ID or Mobile-ID in the Nordics and Baltics.

No. SEO traffic has high buying intent and expects more informative, longer pages with an FAQ section. Social media ad traffic is impulse-based and needs a short, visually engaging, emotion-centred page. The same page for both sources usually gives a worse result for each.

CRO (Conversion Rate Optimization) is the systematic process of testing and improving landing page elements with the goal of raising the percentage of visitors who take the desired action. By lifting the conversion rate from 1% to 2% you double revenue without increasing the ad budget.

A B2B landing page has to be long enough to cover the questions that arise in the buyer's consideration phase: usually the value proposition, a list of benefits, social proof, case studies and a clear CTA. A short form at the top of the page and a more thorough form at the bottom work well for collecting qualified enquiries.
