Part 1

What is marketing and why does it matter more today than ever?

Marketing is a many-sided discipline whose purpose is to create value for customers, win them over and keep them for the long term.

Marketing is much more than ads or social media. In fact marketing is a systematic process that is the main engine of business growth. By the American Marketing Association's (AMA) definition, marketing is the set of activities, institutions and processes for creating, communicating and delivering value to customers.

Peter Drucker, the famous management theorist, said: "The aim of marketing is to make selling superfluous. The aim of marketing is to know and understand the customer so well that the product or service fits them and sells itself." That quote sums up the essence of marketing: it is not selling by force, but understanding customers' real needs.

Five critical functions of marketing

In 2026, when every customer in the information society is surrounded by hundreds of brands, marketing is critically important. Without marketing you stay invisible. Without strategic marketing you waste money and resources.

Part 2

The 4P model of marketing

The most common marketing framework, which helps you build a strategy and make decisions.

The 4P model of marketing, the classic "marketing mix", is the foundation of marketing strategy. Developed in the 1960s, it is still relevant today. Here are the details:

P
Definition
Example
Product
What do you sell? What features, quality and benefits does it offer?
Free setup, 24/7 support, double guarantee
Price
How much does it cost? How does the price compare with competitors?
10 euros a month, 20% off for pre-orders
Place
Where and how do customers buy? Direct sales, retail, online?
Website, Shopify, direct sales team
Promotion
How do you present the product? Advertising, PR, social media?
Meta and Google ads, influencer partnerships

At every point you have to make deliberate decisions that are consistent with your overall business vision and target audience.

Part 3

Digital marketing vs traditional marketing

How they differ and why digital marketing dominates today.

Aspect
Traditional
Digital
Media
TV, radio, newspapers, posters
Google Ads, Meta, email, social media
Targeting precision
Broad, the whole society
Extremely precise: age, location, interests
Measurement
Hard, estimated
Precise: clicks, conversions, ROI
Price
Expensive, large minimums
Flexible, from 50 euros a month
Speed
Slow, weeks
Live within minutes
Flexibility
Hard to change
Real-time optimization

Today, when most people spend their time online, digital marketing is the natural choice. But traditional marketing is not dead; a combination of both often works best.

Part 4

The pillars of digital marketing

The five main channels digital marketing is made of.

Meta ads: Facebook and Instagram marketing

Meta's (formerly Facebook) platforms, Facebook and Instagram, are outstanding digital marketing channels. Together with the Audience Network they reach billions of people. Thanks to the billions of users and precise targeting options, it is the ideal channel for B2C companies.

In Meta ads you can target by location, age, gender, interests, behavior and many other parameters. Across our accounts the ROAS (return on ad spend) averages 4x, and up to 11x in the best cases (our own data, results vary).

Google Ads: search engine advertising

Google Ads lets you be exactly where people search for solutions. When someone searches for "buy a coffee machine", your ad appears. It is a powerful, direct way to find customers.

Google Ads splits into two: search ads and display ads. Search ads are usually more expensive but bring higher-quality traffic.

SEO: search engine optimization

SEO is the process by which your website improves its position in Google search. It is a long-term investment that requires content, technical optimization and link building.

GEO: generative engine optimization

GEO is a new field where content is optimized for generative search engines such as ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews. It will matter a great deal, because more and more people use AI assistants to search.

Email marketing and automation

Email marketing is a personal, effective channel for staying in touch with customers. Automation can be used for welcome, abandoned cart and post-purchase communication. Monthly email marketing reports help you see what works and what does not.

Part 5

The story of Andres and Pearu: strategy vs chance

A lesson about marketing from an Estonian classic.

A. H. Tammsaare's novel "Truth and Justice", the Estonian classic, tells of two farmers, Andres and Pearu. Andres plans, analyzes and builds systematically. Pearu relies on chance and momentary inspiration.

Marketing resembles this story. Many small businesses do "something" in marketing: they post on social media, run random ads, or maybe ask a colleague to handle marketing. But without a strategy it is like Pearu's farm: random decisions that lead nowhere.

Andres would start with research: who is my audience? Where do they spend their time? What do they value most? Which channels bring sales and which do not? Then he builds a plan: where to publish, with what message, with what goals.

Strategy in marketing does not mean rigidity. It means a structured approach that lets you make decisions based on data, not intuition.

Part 6

How to build a marketing strategy in 6 steps

A practical step-by-step guide to building marketing for your business.

1. Define your target audience

Who is your ideal customer? What age? What gender? What are their problems, needs and dreams? The more precise the definition, the better marketing works.

2. Do a competitor analysis

Who are your competitors? How do they market? What are their strengths and weaknesses? How can you stand out?

3. Define your value proposition

Why should someone buy from you rather than from others? What makes your product or service unique? It has to be clear and simple.

4. Choose the channels

Which channels do you choose? Meta, Google, email, social media, SEO? It depends on your audience and budget. Start with one or two, not five at once.

5. Create content and campaigns

What content do you create? What texts, images, videos? What ads and emails do you send? A content calendar helps you stay organized.

6. Measure and optimize

Based on monthly reports, analyze what works and what does not. Conversion rate, CAC, ROAS: these are your guiding metrics. The setup is never final; marketing improves only through iteration and testing.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Answers to your questions about marketing.

What is the difference between marketing and sales?

Marketing is everything that makes your product or service known and creates interest. Sales is the process where the customer buys your offer. Marketing creates demand, sales closes the deal. A good analogy: marketing is the hand that invites, sales is the hand that delivers.

How much should you really spend on marketing?

It depends on your type of business. The usual recommendation is 5 to 15% of revenue. In e-commerce it can be 10 to 20%, in B2B services 3 to 10%. For beginners I recommend 500 to 2,000 euros a month to see results. Efficiency matters more than the amount: better to spend 500 euros smartly than 5,000 euros at random.

Does a small business need a serious marketing strategy?

Yes, especially a small business. A strategy helps you focus and use resources efficiently. Without a strategy you spend money at random and see small results. Larger companies can afford waste, small ones cannot. A good strategy lets you compete with big groups.
