UTM parameters: the complete guide to campaign tracking

Last updated: October 2026 · Author: Sarah Johanna Ferara

If you do not know which channel brings you customers, you cannot scale your marketing. UTM parameters are the simplest and most reliable way to attribute conversions to the right campaign, yet most companies make fundamental mistakes here.

This guide shows step by step how to build a clean UTM system that also works under iOS 14.5+ and privacy-focused browsers, and gives you a clear picture of real ROI in GA4.

Part 1

What UTM parameters are and why they exist

UTM parameters are short snippets of text added to the end of a URL that tell the analytics platform exactly where a visitor came from.

UTM stands for Urchin Tracking Module. Urchin was the original web analytics company Google acquired in 2005, which evolved into today's Google Analytics. Although the technology has made a huge leap since, the UTM principle has stayed the same: it is the most reliable way to tell traffic from different channels apart.

Picture the situation: you publish an article on a media portal, launch remarketing on social media and send out a newsletter. All of them send the reader to the same landing page. Without UTM parameters GA4 lumps those visitors into one vague mass. Correct tagging, however, shows whether the purchase was made by a newsletter reader, an organic post clicker or a user who tapped a Meta ad.

The results of our audits consistently show that a significant share of campaign budgets flows into unidentified channels. The cause is missing or faulty UTM tagging, because of which Google Analytics 4 shows (direct) / (none) traffic as the main source: a black box.

Maison Mint tip: before you invest in the next ad campaign, make sure your UTM system is in place. Without data hygiene every next euro is wasted. If you want help, book a free consultation.
Part 2

The five main UTM parameters

Five main UTM parameters are commonly used. Three of them are mandatory and two optional, but they add important extra information.

Every parameter starts with the prefix utm_ and is added to the end of the URL after a question mark. Several parameters are separated by an ampersand (&).

Parameter
Use
Example
utm_source
The main source of the traffic, i.e. the platform.
facebook, google, newsletter
utm_medium
The type of medium or delivery channel.
cpc, social, email, referral
utm_campaign
The campaign name you define.
summer_sale_2026, black_friday
utm_term
Mainly for the paid search keyword.
marketing_agency_tallinn
utm_content
Tells visuals, A/B tests or buttons apart.
video_v2, cta_button_red

A complete UTM link looks something like this:

https://mintagency.eu/seo?utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=paid_social&utm_campaign=seo_audit_2026&utm_content=video_v2

The first three parameters should always be filled in. utm_term and utm_content add only if you actually plan to use them in reports; otherwise you create noise.

Part 3

How to build UTM links (the Maison Mint standards)

There are many tools; the best known is the Google Campaign URL Builder. The problem, though, lies not in the tools but in data hygiene.

Maison Mint applies strict naming rules on client accounts to avoid data fragmentation. If every team member writes utm_source their own way, GA4 shows 5 different rows for the same channel, and you never see the whole picture.

Naming rules

Maison Mint tip: campaign names should match the exact campaign name in the ad account. We build clients a dedicated Google Sheets file where the whole team generates links centrally. If you want a copy of our template, get in touch.
Part 4

Auto-tagging vs manual tagging

One of the most common mistakes is confusion between automatic and manual tagging. Knowing how they interact is the basis of accurate data.

Google Ads and auto-tagging (GCLID)

When Google Ads and GA4 are linked, Google uses a system called GCLID (Google Click Identifier). This encrypted parameter is added to the URL automatically, and GA4 decodes the campaign, ad group, keyword and creative ID from it. Adding manual UTMs here is usually redundant, and can even overwrite the GCLID data.

Meta (Facebook / Instagram) ads

On the Meta platform Google cannot decode the details automatically. In Meta Ads Manager you always have to use the URL Parameters field to enter dynamic parameters.

utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=paid_social&utm_campaign={{campaign.name}}&utm_content={{ad.name}}

Dynamic templates such as {{campaign.name}} and {{ad.name}} are filled in by Meta itself at the moment of each click, so you do not have to write links by hand for every ad.

Newsletters and LinkedIn

Mailchimp, Klaviyo, Brevo and other email tools do not add UTMs automatically; you have to write them into every campaign link yourself. The same goes for LinkedIn Ads: there is no auto-tagging, so without manual UTMs GA4 does not recognize that traffic as a campaign.

How to view UTM data in GA4

Finding the data in Google Analytics 4 differs considerably from the old Universal Analytics system.

Follow this path to find your UTM campaign data:

  1. In the left menu choose Reports .
  2. Open Acquisition and choose Traffic acquisition.
  3. Change the table's first dimension to Session source / medium.
  4. To see specific campaigns, click + and add Session manual campaign name.
  5. If you need utm_content or utm_term data, add the matching dimension Session manual ad content or Session manual term.

For advanced analysis we recommend building an Explorations report, where you can freely combine campaigns, conversions and the user journey. There you see which UTM campaign brings not only clicks but real buyers.

Maison Mint observation: UTM data is useful only when conversion events are set up correctly in GA4. Before analyzing campaigns, make sure the analytics foundation is in place; our SEO and analytics audit covers all the layers at once.
Part 6

Strategies: B2B vs e-commerce

A UTM system is not the same for everyone. The long B2B sales cycle and the impulsive buying journey of an online store need different approaches.

B2B services and CRM integration

In the B2B sector the deal does not usually happen immediately; weeks or months can pass between filling in the contact form and signing the actual contract. That is why UTM parameters should be captured with the contact form's hidden fields (hidden fields). When the user submits the form, the campaign data moves straight into the CRM (e.g. HubSpot, Pipedrive). That tells the sales team which ad the potential customer arrived through.

For effective B2B scaling, also see our B2B email marketing service, which covers the Nordic and Baltic markets.

E-commerce

For online stores, which we often manage on the Shopify platform, the focus is on granular tagging at the utm_content level. It lets you identify which specific product image, headline or offer brought the best return (ROAS). In e-commerce it also pays to tie UTMs to Shopify Analytics and the GA4 E-commerce reports, so you see across the whole buying journey which channel brings a quality buyer and which only window-shoppers.

Part 7

Technical traps and privacy

Modern digital marketing has to account for technical limitations and EU data protection requirements.

  1. Privacy updates: Apple iOS 14.5+ and privacy-focused browsers (Safari ITP, Brave, Firefox) can limit UTM processing in a third-party context. The solution is server-side tracking, which recovers a large share of the lost data.
  2. Data protection (GDPR): Google Consent Mode v2 is mandatory in Europe. If the user declines cookies, analytics has to behave accordingly: UTM parameters can reach the server, but identifiable attributes must not be stored without consent.
  3. 301 redirects: in many server configurations UTM parameters are lost on redirect (e.g. because of a missing trailing slash). Check that your redirects preserve the query string. Technical guidance is in the Google Search Central documentation.
  4. URL length: some platforms (e.g. older CRMs) truncate overly long URLs. Keep the total length of the UTMs reasonable; under 200 characters is safe.
Part 8

Internal linking and SEO effects

A critical mistake is using UTM parameters inside your own website. It corrupts the data and can damage SEO health.

If you put a UTM link in your website's navigation bar or on a CTA button, the following happens: when a user originally came from Google and clicks the internal link, GA4 starts a new session and attributes the conversion to the wrong channel (for example "home_banner" instead of organic search).

The same problem repeats on the SEO side: internal URLs with UTMs can create duplicate content for search engines. Google sees the same page as several different URLs. The solutions are:

Part 9

Client story: finding the ROI

How a clean UTM system saved a company's Meta ad channel from being shut down.

One of our clients, an interior design company (anonymized), was about to decide to shut down Meta ads completely. GA4 showed them almost zero conversions from Facebook and Instagram, while the monthly cost was considerable. The audit found two problems at once: the Meta ads had no consistent UTM structure, and the iOS 14.5+ updates had broken browser-based tracking.

We applied the Maison Mint UTM standard (lowercase, underscores, campaigns matching Meta Ads Manager) and set up the Meta Conversions API for a server-side signal. Three weeks later the data showed the real picture: the Meta channel was consistently bringing in a double-digit number of higher-value enquiries a month and the return on ad spend (ROAS) was positive (our own account data). Correct data prevented a profitable channel from being shut down.

If your Meta and Google Ads data also seems illogical, chances are the problem is not the ads but the measurement.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Answers to the most frequent questions about UTM parameters and campaign tracking.

UTM parameters are text-based tags added to the end of a URL (utm_source, utm_medium, utm_campaign and others) that help analytics software such as Google Analytics 4 identify the exact source and campaign of the traffic.

Three are mandatory: utm_source (the source, e.g. facebook), utm_medium (the channel type, e.g. cpc) and utm_campaign (the campaign name). utm_content and utm_term are optional and help with more detailed A/B testing and keyword analysis.

No. Internal UTMs overwrite the original traffic source and start a new session in GA4, breaking conversion attribution. For internal clicks use GA4 events or separate query parameters.

GA4 is case-sensitive: utm_source=Facebook and utm_source=facebook are two different rows in analytics. Consistent lowercase keeps reports clean and comparable.

In GA4 choose Reports → Acquisition → Traffic acquisition. Change the primary dimension to Session source / medium and add the secondary dimension Session manual campaign to see individual campaigns.

No. When Google Ads and GA4 are linked, auto-tagging (GCLID) passes all the data automatically. Manual UTMs are redundant and can overwrite the data. Meta, LinkedIn and newsletters, however, always need manual UTMs.

If UTMs are used wrongly on internal links or without a canonical tag, there is a risk of duplicate content. On external campaign links (social media, newsletters) there is no effect on SEO at all.
